Accurate description and tips based on firsthand experience

My First Buying Experience

Sellers give somewhat confusing (and different) descriptions of this yarn with some wrong details. The label is almost entirely in Chinese except for a few numbers and symbols that English speakers may understand (kind of). I did not find comprehensive reviews either to be able to get a clear idea.

Yet the pricing and pictures looked so good...

To give it a try, I ordered a small lot of skeins on eBay. The price I paid was 99 cents per skein with free shipping. After that I had to be patient as my package traveled for about a month to my destination in the U.S.

The yarn turned out to be different from what was advertised. I had to figure out by myself what kind of yarn I got.

Tests and Translation of Label

To check the yarn, I ran some yarn tests and asked a Chinese native speaker to help me understand the label.

I did a burn test which showed that this fiber burns into ashes similar to 100% cotton ashes. This test proved natural plant content.

Then I knitted gauge swatches and measured the yarn wraps per inch to identify its weight. The tests showed sport fine weight.

To figure out the yardage, I made some measurements and calculations. The yardage I give below is pretty close to the exact one.

Also, I found out the most critical information on the label.

What to Use Baby Bamboo Cotton Yarn For

This yarn is perfect to knit and crochet baby wear and kid's clothes: hats, blankets, booties, sweaters, dresses, rompers, booties - you name it!

This blend is also quite good to make women's garments. I knitted a few women's tops with this yarn using the double (2-strand) method. Working with this material was enjoyable and satisfying. The tunic and tops came out quite nice (clicking on pictures will take you to respective free knitting pattern pages). This bamboo cotton yarn feels light-weight, soft, breathable, and comfortable.

Pros and Cons to Consider Before You Buy This Yarn

  • Competitive low price.
  • Light-weight fiber.
  • Significant yardage/length per skein: 220 yards/201 m in 1.75 oz/50 g.
  • Natural plant-based content.
  • Feels silky and soft and looks shiny.
  • Comes in a huge variety of colors for any taste.
  • Breathable.
  • Strong fiber structure.
  • Shrink-resistant.
  • Odor-resistant.
  • Wrinkle-resistant.
  • Dries quickly.

I see 3 minor drawbacks all of which are fixable.

  • The yarn is a bit slippery*. This can be easily fixed if you use plastic or wooden hooks and needles (in particular made from bamboo) instead of metal ones.

*Dark colors are less slippery and feel more like cotton.

  • The yarn strand comprises 6 thin plies that may split if you put a needle or hook through them accidentally while working. To avoid this, at the very beginning just pay more attention to how you are moving your needle or hook. Shortly, you will overcome this minor inconvenience.
  • Regular shipping from China (in my case it was free) to the U.S. takes several weeks. To receive  it faster, you would have to pay some extra amount.

When ordering Tencel Bamboo Cotton Yarn on eBay, please keep in mind that sellers tend to raise their price and start charging for regular shipping after they get some number of sales and reviews. So, check their terms and in case of a price increase look for another seller offering a lower price.

Happy shopping and crafting!
