INSTRUCTIONS

Notes

The vest is worked from the bottom up in 3 pieces: two fronts and a back. The pieces are seamed and, in case of the buttoned version, a button and a crocheted loop are added.

RIGHT/LEFT FRONT

(identical and reversible)

Work either front as follows.

Cast on 44 sts loosely.

Work even in garter st (knit across) until piece measures 17''/43 cm from bottom.

Shape armhole and collar on next rows:

Row 1: bind off first 4 sts, knit next sts to last 2 sts, kfb (increase for collar), knit 1.

Row 2: knit across.

Row 3: bind off first st, knit next sts to last 2 sts, kfb, knit 1.

Row 4: knit across.

Row 5: knit to last 2 sts, kfb, knit 1.

Repeat rows 4 and 5 four times to continue increases for collar.

After all increases worked for collar, number of sts on row is 46 sts.

Work next rows even in garter st until piece measures 24½''/61.5 cm from bottom.

Finish collar on next row starting at collar edge (knit another row if necessary to get to required edge): bind off first 24 sts, knit next sts to end of row.

22 sts remaining on row.

Work last rows even in garter st until piece measures 25''/63 cm from bottom.

Bind off. Break yarn, leaving yarn tail for seam (approx 20''/50 cm).

BACK

Cast on 80 sts loosely.

Work even in garter st (knit across) until piece measures 17''/43 cm from bottom.

Shape armholes on next rows:

Row 1: bind off first 4 sts, knit next sts to end of row.

Row 2: bind off first 4 sts, knit next sts to end of row.

Row 3: bind off first st, knit next sts to end of row.

Row 4: bind off first st, knit next sts to end of row.

70 sts remaining on row.

Work next rows even in garter st until piece measures 25''/63 cm from bottom.

Bind off. Break yarn, leaving yarn tail for seam (approx 20''/50 cm).

Finishing

Sew the front and back pieces at the shoulders and sides, leaving a slit at either side approx 3''/7.5 cm above the bottom.

Blocking is not necessary unless you need to adjust measurements; if this is the case, wet block.

For the buttoned version, sew in a button and crochet a button loop after trying the vest on. On the sample vest, the button is approx 13''/33 cm above the bottom and 2½''/5 cm from the inner edge.
